Rise of New Heroes
Master of Shadow and Darkness
Damien Black was a Professor of Archeology at the University of California(Berkeley). He would usually teach the Fall and Spring semesters and spend his summers running all over the world chasing ancient artifacts. He had been to South America, the Middle East, and China as well as several interesting sites in Africa. He had been in Ireland most recently and had just returned with a consignment of pre-Dark Ages artifacts, including several interesting manuscripts in a language he was unfamiliar with and some weapons and armor that appeared to be very out of date also… it was fascinating! While he was hard at work cataloging the pieces he started looking through one of the manuscripts. All of a sudden, it began to make sense even though he was certain he didn’t know how to read the language it was in. He read a few lines, and then realized that he was dealing with something he shouldn’t be messing with! Alas, it was too late. Even the few lines he had read had caused an ancient guardian spirit to be summoned, a revenant from the Shadow Realm, which proceeded to animate one of the suits of armor. Dr. Black had no real mystic knowledge, but did possess a bit of lore on such subjects, and he knew his only chance was to get onto holy ground or something similar. He tried to run, but the revenant grabbed him just as he got through the door. Luckily for him, one of his fellow professors, Dr. Arcane(or whatever you want to name him, GM) really was an adept of the mystic arts and was also working late that night. When the guardian spirit animated the armor, Dr. Arcane sensed it and rushed to Dr. Black’s office. He arrived to find the revenant spirit guardian draining the life essence from Dr. Black… he was able, through a complicated ritual to return to Black what the spirit had drained from him. However, the experience had changed Dr. Black. His spirit had been sucked into the Shadow Realm and then pulled back out… and his body and spirit were both changed by this. Most normal men wouldn’t have survived, but Damien Black was no normal man… his mind, body and will had always been extraordinary, and now they were even more so. Once Dr. Arcane had helped him to come to terms with the changes in his life and made certain there would be no lingering negative effects from his change he told Damien that he had been given a gift, and he should use that gift. To help him, Dr. Arcane enchanted a special suit of armor for him. It looks and feels like a suit of black metal plate mail, but is as flexible as cloth when Damien moves around and does his karate moves. Also, even though he wears no helmet, his head and neck are protected as if he did. It, and his cape, are covered in red glowing runes… Dr. Arcane has hinted that the armor has other abilities just waiting to be discovered, but so far, Damien’s been too busy figuring out his own abilities to worry about anything else.
